Tolar Mason’s mother was found wandering with the young infant in her arms near a secluded temple in the western mountains. The seven deva who lived in the temple raised the lad after his mother died of exposure, and for reasons he was never told, they woorked powerful rituals to shift the complex to the Astral Sea. There the temple functioned more like a ship, as the group traveled the seas and Mason was trained in the rudiments of doctrine and seamanship as soon as he was able to walk and talk.

During the years riding the astral sea, a regular visitor to the floating temple was hooded, mysterious figure. The stranger rarely spoke in Tolar’s presence, but he always placed a single finger on the child’s forehead each visit before departing again. The deva never never spoke about or explained the visitations.

When he was 9, Tolar was brought by the deva back the World, and taken to the Standfords. The couple adopted the child into thier family, and he became heir to the title. Having grown up with only the otheworldly and dedicated mystics of the cloister, Mason found his first true friends in Gregg and Yiann. The trio grew up together and thier friendship and childhood adventures earned them the collective nickname “the Keep Rats”.
